Strong expansion and job opportunities set to follow at the plant

Yorkshire-based Contract Production Ltd has increased its capacity by 400% virtually

overnight thanks to a £250,000 investment in new technology.

Contract Production manufactures a range of sub-contract electronic products and printed

circuit board assemblies for a wide variety of industries. This can be one-off prototypes, up

to volumes in their 10,000s. A recent investment and installation of an AM100 Panasonic

Pick and Place line has enabled the company to increase its output by an astonishing

400%.

The new production line populates printed circuit boards and can place a staggering

30,000 components per hour, blowing away previous capacity limits.

This essentially, means that we now measure productivity in seconds not minutes, said

Managing Director Simon Norris. Thanks to the new production line we have added an

extra 30-40 weeks of working capacity to the business annually; In time, that could see our

work force go from 20 employees to around 50-60 which will be great news for the area.

The new pick and place machine was manufactured in the Far East and shipped to the

manufacturing base in Pickering at the end of 2017. The system has effectively

streamlined the companys whole process, taking a bare printed circuit board, populating it

and producing an inspected product at the end of the line.

Obviously, the speed depends on the complexity of the circuit board or product we are

producing, said Simon.

He added: There has been a lot of talk about the UKs stagnating productivity levels but

this investment into Contract Productions shows there is opportunity and we can now

deliver on much larger orders with improved turnaround for our customers that we could

only dream of a few weeks ago. It is a major leap forward technology-wise and we are all

very excited about the possibilities this brings for the business and our customers.

As well as the larger orders going into the hundreds of thousands Contract Production also

produces one-off prototypes or low rate production runs for clients - often hand-placed - for

new products yet to go to market. These can be anything that requires circuit boards, from

GPS tracking devices to wind turbines, cameras to measuring instrumentation for deep

sea oil drilling rigs.

Technology investment enables North Yorkshire manufacturer to win largest ever order

Contract Production Ltd, the North Yorkshire-based manufacturer, has secured its largest ever customer order weeks after investing in new technology.

Contract Production, based in Pickering, manufactures a range of sub-contract electronic products and printed circuit board assemblies for a wide variety of industries. This can be one-off prototypes, going up to volumes in their 10,000s.

A recent investment and installation of the AM100 Panasonic Pick and Place line enabled the company to increase its output by 400%.

This new capacity on its manufacturing floor enabled the company to win a six-figure overseas contract to supply more than 1000 sets of circuit boards for an overseas customer.

The new CP production line features printed circuit boards and can place up to 30,000 components per hour.

Simon Norris, managing director of Contract Production Ltd, said: We knew the new pick and place technology would allow us to compete for larger orders, but this has exceeded even our most optimistic starts for this financial year.

The new production line has helped us to add an extra 30-40 weeks of working capacity to the business annually and this latest contract will fill several of those from the outset.

North Yorks' manufacturer doubles work space in head office acquisition

Yorkshire-based Contract Production Ltd has acquired its current head office and production facilities in Pickering, expanding into a third adjoining unit as part of its ongoing
expansion programme.

CPL shareholders have purchased 9,600 sq ft, spread across three adjoining units on the Thornton Road Industrial estate, investing more than £500,000 in the acquisition and
modernisation programme. CPL had been leasing two of the units for the last 10 years but took the opportunity to buy both, along with a third space, that had stood empty since 2017. This has enabled the firm that produces a range of sub-contract electronic products and printed circuit boards assemblies to almost double its current work space.

CPL Managing Director Simon Norris said he is delighted they have finally signed and secured the additional space to allow for the company’s expansion plans. He said: “The
additional empty unit is basically a shell so we are starting with a blank space which gives us plenty of options; it’s a very exciting time for the company and the staff who will have a big say in how we can best utilise the new areas.”

“The space may well be used to create a dedicated area for our automated production line to expand into, and grow our component stores and warehousing, as well as provide
much-needed admin space and meeting rooms.”

Outside the premises, the new CPL footprint also allows a further 10 parking spaces for staff and visitors.

The latest expansion plans have been fuelled by a significant six figure investment last year in the firm’s production lines that have led to a 30% like-for-like increase in CPL’s
turnover in the last 12 months alone.

Simon added: “I am very confident we will continue to grow as we make the most of the extra space and, as a result, add to the current 22-strong workforce we have in Pickering.”

CPL plans to officially unveil the new-look premises later this year, also coinciding with its 10 th anniversary.

Contract Production Manufacturer Continues To Serve The World With Record Output

Yorkshire-based sub-contract electronics manufacturer Contract Production, have enjoyed a record-breaking month after fulfilling one of their biggest-ever orders in record time, securing their growth and development at a time of global uncertainty amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

The firm, whose base of operations is in Pickering, manufactured 247 noise measurement instrument kits, each made up of a scientific sound level meter alongside an acoustic calibrator, to fulfil a large order obtained by one of their key accounts, Cirrus Research plc. The fully-assembled acoustic measurement kits were delivered in-full and on-time to the police force in Delhi, India, to help officers enforce noise level regulations on the roads, and at public events and private gatherings such as parties and weddings.

The order, which was also a record-breaker for Cirrus Research, was turned around in just four weeks as opposed to the originally-anticipated timescale of eight to nine weeks.

Newly-appointed Operations Manager Andy Chiles said: "I'm incredibly proud of the whole team for their hard work in getting this order fulfilled on-time and in-full. This is one of our largest single orders, so it required some changes and adaptations to ensure we provided both Cirrus Research and the Delhi police force, with the instruments they needed".

He went on to say: "The order came through just as the COVID-19 crisis caused many of our suppliers in China to shut down. The fact that we were able to complete this order is testament to the flexibility and adaptability of Contract Production as a business, as well as our team."

Contract Production managed the whole manufacturing process of the order, from sourcing and assembly, right through to calibration, testing and packing. Many members of the Contract Production team were upskilled, and additional shifts were put on to ensure that the tight deadline was met.

This recent success follows a long and steady period of significant growth for the North Yorkshire manufacturer, with record levels of investment from its shareholders demonstrating the confidence they have in the firm moving forward.

In early 2025, we installed and commissioned a cutting-edge surface mount 3D AOI inspection system. It reduces false calls, improves end-of-line quality, enhances process efficiency, and increases yields - a real step forward in both capability and reliability.

4. Any exciting developments on the horizon?

We are continuously investing in improvements across the business. On the roadmap are new manufacturing systems and equipment, including automated selective soldering, vapour phase reflow technology, and X-Ray inspection. These investments will expand our capacity and capability, while ensuring we remain a trusted partner for customers with increasingly complex requirements.

During the global uncertainty and supply chain chaos of the Covid-19 pandemic, we successfully delivered one of our largest-ever export orders: 247 sound-measurement kits for fellow MIY member, Cirrus Research plc, destined for the Delhi Police. From manufacture to assembly, testing and calibration, everything was completed in a record-breaking four weeks.

After months of hard work behind the scenes, the team at Contract Production have finally been able to unveil their new website, which features a whole new design and layout to support the firm's continued growth throughout the next few months. The redevelopment of the website is yet another part of Contract Production's shareholders' commitment to improving the way the firm does business. Did you know that Alfred Nobel was inspired to start the Nobel Prize when he read his own obituary in a newspaper that ran it by mistake?

Nobel didn't like the headline, "The Merchant of Death is Dead," which was reference to the fact that he invented dynamite, so he found a new legacy for himself.

Did you know that the first fax process was patented in 1843 by Alexander Bain, but fax machines didn't actually go into service until 1964!

It is thought that Johann Vaaler was the first to invent the paper clip.

Vaaler was employed by the owner of an invention office when he invented the paper clip in 1899.

The paper clip remains one of the most-used items of all time!

We didn't just figure out how to blow things up with the invention of dynamite…nitroglycerin itself had been around for years.

Alfred Nobel worked with nitroglycerin in a series of experiments.

Knowing how unstable it could be, Nobel continually tested methods for the safe transportation of nitroglycerin.

Nobel ingeniously developed a formula where the explosive could be mixed with clay without hindering its explosive power - that's where dynamite was made!

Life before antibiotics was certainly different to life now, and much shorter.

Luckily, in 1929 a young Scottish bacteriologist called Alexander Fleming went on holiday, and before he left he forgot to cover a petri-dish of Staphylococcus in his lab.

When he returned, Fleming noticed that a mold in the dish had killed off many of the other bacteria.

A decade later, Howard Florey and Ernst Chain picked up where Fleming left off, isolating the bacteria-slaying substance and turned it into a fully administrable medicine: Penicilin!

Contract Production Ltd become essential partner in delivery of large Indian contract

Contract Production Ltd recently played an essential role in helping another Yorkshire-based business in the completion of an urgent Export order to India.

The team at Contract Production were able to help Cirrus Research plc in Hunmanby meet the short deadline on a contract for sound level meters worth around $800k thanks to their Panasonic AM100 Pick and Place line.

The production line, which was increased in 2018, populates printed circuit boards and can place over 30,000 components per hour, a key advantage when deadlines are tight on projects.

Managing Director, Simon Norris said, “We were honoured to support our long term customer Cirrus Research in the production of their GPS Sound Level Meters for this contract, and to help them meet the very strict deadline.

“Being able to assist in the development of a brand-new product in what was a difficult year for all industries was a real pleasure.

“We have continued to be the manufacturing partner for a range of sub-contract electronic products and printed circuit board assemblies serving a wide variety of industries, and we pride ourselves on being able to offer 21^st Century electronics manufacturing solutions coupled with customer service based on traditional Yorkshire values.”

North Yorkshire Manufacturer Welcomes New Operations Manager To Support Continued Growth & Development

Yorkshire-based electronics manufacturer, Contract Production Ltd, has recently recruited Andrew Chiles as their new Operations Manager. Andrew's appointment comes at an exciting time for Contract Production, as continued growth and development continue to see the firm perform incredibly well. The shareholders have invested significantly in the business in the last year alone, which supported the purchase of new equipment and additional workspace to meet the growth and demands of the organisation.

Andrew brings with him 30 years of valuable knowledge and experience in the manufacturing industry. Starting from the shop floor, he worked up the ranks through technical, sales and operational roles. This provided him with a full and comprehensive understanding of the demands and requirements to make a successful manufacturing organisation. In his most recent role, Andrew served as Director at Cleveland Circuits for 11 years.

Contract Production's Managing Director, Simon Norris, said he is delighted to have Andrew on-board and is excited to implement his new ideas. Simon added "Andrew is going to be a great addition to the team. His passion and excitement are really going to rejuvenate the business and help us discover the best working practices to benefit our team and most importantly, our valued customers".

Emma Wrigglesworth, Contract Production's Sales Manager, also welcomes the new appointment. She added "I think Andrew is going to be great in the role and I'm really confident in his skills and experience. We are now taking the steps to really expand our business, and he is certainly going to help lead the way. Andrew's appointment and the year-long programme with Manufacturing Excellence will put us in a great position to secure our success moving forward."

Andrew said he is delighted to be joining Contract Production in such a key role saying his primary objectives are "to employ the best practice internally and to invest in staff, equipment and resources to improve process efficiency, capacity and profitability”. He added, “I will also be looking to expand operations into the new building that was purchased recently to allow us to continue to maximise future growth potential and to capitalise on external business opportunities."

Away from the world of manufacturing, Andrew is a passionate photographer and uses a state-of-the-art drone to capture stunning aerial visuals of the local area. He is also a keen guitarist and enjoys plays music in his downtime.

Contract Production manufactures a range of sub-contract electronic products and printed circuit board assemblies for a wide variety of industries. This can be one-off runs, going up to volumes in their tens of thousands. Last year's investment in the business resulted in the installation of the AM100 Panasonic Pick and Place line, enabling the firm to increase its output by up to 400%.

As well as larger orders, Contract Production also produces one-off prototypes or low-rate production runs for clients - often hand-placed - for new products yet to go to market. These can be anything from GPS tracking devices to measurement instrumentation for deep-sea oil drilling rigs.
